Today the grade 5 students went to the Calgary Police Youthlink Interpretive Centre.  Share with a family member the Street Smart programs we went through in the morning.  Which program do think was the best for your learning? Our class began our investigation into electricity and magnetism! We experimented with static electricity with a class activity, then began researching how a lightbulb and battery work. In gym, we have been designing a Zumba routine to share and teach the class! Our class has begun to examine artifacts from the Glenbow Museum on the Blackfoot First Nations people. Share with a family member the artifacts we examined today. How do the Blackfoot people contribute to the identity of Albertans? Canadians? We will be discussing your ideas in class tomorrow.

Today we continued to create our Junk Monsters! Share with a family member the multi-media sculpture you have been working on in class. We also began our descriptive writing for our Junk Monsters characters. We are working on adding specific details, similes, onomatopoeia to create an image for the reader when we are writing. Who is your junk monster? What makes them unique? What interesting adaptions do they have? Share your ideas with your family.

Our class has been busy working on descriptive narrative writing. We have been focussing on adding details, suspense and great hooks to our stories. Today we began designing our Junk Monster characters! Share with a family member your plan for creating your junk monster. Begin to think about the character traits of your monster, as well as special adaptations it might have.

Our class has been working on our curling skills in Phys. Ed.! Explain to a family member the rules for how to play. What tips can you give for how to accurately throw the rock toward the house? What strategies has your team been using in class?

The virtue for the month of January is Sportsmanship. How have you demonstrated sportsmanship in Phys. Ed.? How have you seen your classmates show this virtue?  Be prepared to share your ideas with the class tomorrow.

Our class has begun to examine Alberta's fossil history! Share with a family member how a fossil is created and the different types of fossils we have learned about. What questions do you have about Albert's fossils? What connections can you make to our study?

Our class has been working on instructional writing this week! Share with a family member our instructional writing text structure:

1. What: What is the task or goal?
2. What: What materials do you need?
3. How: How do you complete the task?

Look for examples of instructional writing at home and school. What makes excellent instructional writing? What examples of transition words can you find? Be prepared to share your ideas in class tomorrow.

We've been looking and discussing the works of famous artist Pablo Picasso to complete an art critique.  Please discuss with a family member what you learned about critically thinking about art.  How is the piece put together?  Is there are story being told? What colors are being used? How does the piece make you feel? What makes a good work of art for you? Why?
